There Are Plenty of Business Lawyers Out There: Why Deanne?

There’s no shortage of business lawyers, so why me? As a former General Counsel for public and private companies, I bring a unique perspective to counseling your business.

  • I understand what it means to be part of your team and invested in your business success. I may be the outside lawyer, but my passion is to see your business succeed.
  • I take a holistic, big picture approach to your business. I like handling day- to-day matters and putting out fires; but I love proactively counseling your business to avoid bigger problems and plan more effectively for success.
  • I offer competitive fees and alternative billing arrangements that emphasize efficiency and predictability so that businesses can better manage their legal expenses.

I have almost 30 years legal experience and for 14 of those years I was a GC for both publicly traded and private companies. During that time, I worked on many day-to-day matters but also on larger initiatives such as:

  • developing extensive procedures to insulate company from legal risk and enhance regulatory compliance
  • revamping and streamlining all company contracts
  • conducting internal investigations, overseeing independent investigations and leading company responses to DOJ and SEC investigations
  • completing a financial restatement that was successful in re-listing the company with Nasdaq
  • implementing leading edge practices for aligning the law department with company strategic goals

Prior to my in-house work, I was a trial attorney conducting first chair jury and judge trials, arbitrations and mediations involving my business clients. The combination of extensive in-house and trial attorney experience is a bit unique in the legal field. But it gives me a perspective especially applicable to counseling businesses in all aspects of legal matters.

About Me

I am a second generation San Franciscan and, like all SF natives, the first thing we ask one another is: where did you go to high school? For me, it was Convent of the Sacred Heart. I went to Cal for undergrad and Hastings for law school. I’ve lived in five of the six Bay Area counties (missing only Marin). I know the Bay Area. But I also have strong ties to Southern California, with family in Los Angeles and clients throughout the area.

I believe in giving back to the community and am involved in various volunteer activities with the local humane society, a nonprofit that provides physical activities for the disabled, and a co-op that supports small farmers.

When not at my desk I am usually reading hopelessly obscure Russian history books, hiking just about anywhere, or watching college football. In 2003, I passed the test administered by the American Society of Wine Educators and became a Certified Wine Specialist. I teach a class on the basics of wine and will occasionally write a wine column, both of which advocate eliminating the sillier aspects of the whole wine scene and just enjoying the beverage.

It may be old fashioned, but I have a personal and professional motto: act justly, be kind, and walk humbly.
